Wadena Deer Creek got their first win of the season with a 9-8 win over the Laker boys hockey team last night.

The Laker girls basketball team was defeated by Thief River Falls 65-58 at Thief River Falls for their 5th straight loss.

Tonight the Laker boys basketball team takes on Wadena Deer Creek at the Ralph Anderson gym. Hear the game on KDLM at 7:15pm.

The Laker boys wrestling team takes on Frazee tonight in Frazee at 7:30pm.

Wild Blank Avalanche

(Denver, CO) -- Niklas Backstrom recorded his third shutout of the year and 25th of his career as the Wild beat the Avalanche, 1-0. Greg Zanon lit the lamp in the first frame for Minnesota, which has won three of the last four. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play. The Wild continue a three-game road trip tomorrow night at Dallas.

T'Wolves Hit The Hardwood

(Newark, NJ) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves hit the hardwood this evening as they square off against the New Jersey Nets at the Prudential Center. The T'wolves are coming off a 109-99 setback to Indiana on Wednesday to fall to 10-and-12 on the season. Minnesota heads back to the Target Center tomorrow evening to host the Houston Rockets.

Gophers AD Announces Retirement

(Minneapolis, MN) -- University of Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi announced his retirement on Thursday. Maturi's departure will be effective on June 30th when his current contract expires. During his 10 years of service at Minnesota, Maturi led the difficult merger of the men's and women's athletic departments, the fund raising and construction of TCF Bank Stadium and men's and women's hockey and wrestling national championship titles. Maturi will remain a member of the University community, assisting with course development and teaching classes in the College of Education and Human Development's Department of Kinesiology the following year. He will also help the University with fund raising and working on special projects assigned by the president.

Gophers Continue Big Ten Play Sunday

(Lincoln, NE) -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers wrap up this week's play on Sunday against Nebraska in Lincoln. The Gophers suffered a 63-59 setback at Iowa on Wednesday evening to fall to 4-and-6 in the Big Ten. They have dropped two-of-three, but won four of their last six overall to sit at 16-and-7 on the season.
